(Running time: 1 hour 5 minutes) This module provides a basic technical introduction to the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard. It discusses how DICOM has different levels, its information model, as well as the different parts of the DICOM standard. Negotiating DICOM connection using different roles (Service Class Users and Providers) is explained as well as the basic DICOM compatibility concept, i.e. SOP Classes. The definition of an information object, in this case a CT image, is explained including the modules and individual data elements such as Patient Name, ID, Sex, etc. The Value Representations for these attributes, which defines how to encode the information, and a true DICOM 'header' is shown and explained. This module provides the basic foundation on which other DICOM learning modules can be built upon. Participants will gain a basic understanding of the DICOM message structure and communication protocol.
