Course Objectives
You will be able to:
- Distinguish between the different versions of HL7 version 2
- Identify the different segments in a message
- Differentiate between the two acknowledgement modes
- Identify the trigger events in the message
Skills Taught
After the course you will be able to:
- Parse an HL7 version 2 message
- Read an Abstract Syntax definition to find out if it matches an actual message
- Interpret the text and numeric data fields
- Identify the main components of the patient identification, visit, observation and allergy segments
Course Contents
- History and background, protocol, versions, version 3 relationship and IHE
- Message structure and behavior, segments, encoding, trigger events, Abstract Message Syntax, Acknowledgements, TXT and Numerics
- Patient Administration (ADT), MSH, EVN segments
- Admission details, Identification, Visit, Observations and Allergy segments
Course Objectives
You will be able to:
- Understand Order messages and the role of the order placer and filler
- Identify what belongs in the ORC and OBR order segments
- Understand the impact of any of the patient corrections, such as merge, move, updates and changes

After the course you will be able to:
- Interpret the coded data elements and date/time
- Use the appropriate message for changing any of the patient information
- Understand the results messages such as used for labs or radiology
- Read and interpret the IHE technical framework with regard to the HL7 messages

- Coded terminologies, Date/Time datatypes
- Order placer, filler, ORM, ORC, OBR, QPD, RCP
- Modifications: cancelations, updates, moves, merges, changes (ADT) and results (ORU)
- Integration using HL7: PAM, PIX and PDQ profiles of IHE
