Advanced PACS, DICOM, HL7 Troubleshooting

This advanced seminar teaches both advanced technical skills and troubleshooting skills. A base knowledge of DICOM and HL7 is highly recommended and/or several years experience as a PACS administrator to get optimal benefit from this seminar. The DICOM and HL7 interface standards will be briefly described in the form of a "refresher", as the emphasis is on the hands-on component and doing the exercises. We will also focus on troubleshooting, testing and validating HL7 and DICOM connections, an overview of new standards developments in DICOM and HL7 and interpretation of interface specifications.

Detailed Learning Objectives

Students will get to understand the role of new PACS architectures, aka PACS 2.0 which includes a VNA and exchange with external information exchanges using IHE protocols. They will use a simulator using a HL7 message sender and validator, a Modality worklist simulator taking in the HL7 messages and converting them into DICOM worklist entries, a modality simulator, PACS archive, viewer and HL7 report generator. The seminar also includes a set of sample transactions and many test images that can be used for testing and troubleshooting.

This is a hands-on class, students must bring a laptop with them. The class size is limited to allow for a true interactive environment.
